Gold Fields Ghana Foundation Boosts Education and Healthcare with Major ICT Donation
In a significant investment into local education and healthcare infrastructure, the Gold Fields Ghana Foundation (GFGF) has donated 15 brand-new HP computers and promised high-speed internet connectivity, valued at over GH¢200,000, to the Tarkwa Technical Institute (TTI) and the Abosso Health Centre.
The donation, spearheaded by GFGF Project Manager Sandra Deladem Woahnyah, directly addresses critical ICT gaps identified during a recent foundation visit to the technical institute.
"ICT training has become an indispensable component of modern education," stated Madam Woahnyah during the handover ceremony at TTI. "This is the 21st century, and digital literacy is paramount. During our visit, we discovered that despite having an ICT lab and smart boards, TTI lacked a single functional computer. Our Executive Secretary, Mr. Abdel Razak Yakubu, immediately promised to rectify this."
True to that promise, GFGF delivered 10 HP computers to TTI, enabling the institute to finally utilize its existing ICT infrastructure for practical student training.
The foundation's commitment to digital transformation extended beyond education. Recognizing the urgent need for digitization in healthcare, GFGF also donated 5 HP computers to the Abosso Health Centre. "Healthcare delivery is increasingly moving away from paperwork," explained Madam Woahnyah. "This donation will build the capacity of the health centre, making healthcare more accessible and efficient for the community. To further enhance this, we will also be providing Starlink internet connectivity to ensure fast, reliable access, helping to prevent delays that could lead to casualties."
Madam Woahnyah emphasized the broader vision: "Through these initiatives, the Gold Fields Ghana Foundation is focused on building sustainable institutional capacity for the communities surrounding our operations."
Principal Expresses Shock and Gratitude
The donation was met with immense gratitude and surprise by TTI Principal Helen Asmah. She recounted the foundation's visit just a month prior, led by Executive Secretary Abdel Razak Yakubu, where the school's challenges, particularly the empty ICT lab, were discussed.
"We were absolutely surprised to receive the call that the Foundation was coming with the computers today," an elated Asmah confessed. "Often, visitors make promises that are never fulfilled. When Gold Fields said they were bringing the computers, I was genuinely shocked. I am extremely grateful for this kind gesture on behalf of the entire teaching staff and students."
Principal Asmah pledged meticulous care of the equipment to ensure all students benefit. She also highlighted the long-term value: "This is not just a donation; it is an investment that will generate the skilled talents Gold Fields and other industries will need in the future."
Community Leader Applauds Commitment, Issues Call to Action
Daniel Kofi Asomdwe Agropah, Assembly Member for the Senyakrom Electoral Area, joined in praising GFGF. He notably pointed out that TTI falls outside Gold Fields' official catchment area, making the donation even more significant.
"Gold Fields has demonstrated an exceptional commitment to technical education and the future of our students and nation, regardless of strict catchment boundaries," Agropah stated. "The teaching staff, students, and I are overjoyed. This generosity extends to the wider community. I now appeal to other companies operating in this area to follow Gold Fields' example and come to the aid of TTI. With more support, the school can train even more students effectively for the future."
The donation of computers and the forthcoming Starlink internet installation represent a substantial step towards modernizing education and healthcare delivery in Tarkwa, driven by the Gold Fields Ghana Foundation's commitment to sustainable community development and institutional capacity building.
