The directive follows persistent complaints from the Ghana Water Company Limited (GWCL) and the Water Resources Commission (WRC) over the company’s refusal to comply with environmental regulations.

Ongoing Violations Despite Directives

Earnest Hoffman, an officer of the Water Resources Commission at Ghana Water Company Limited, briefed the Western Regional Minister on Wangkang Ceramics’ repeated disregard for instructions aimed at protecting the water source. Despite clear directives from both GWCL and WRC, the company continued operations that obstructed the river’s flow and purity, endangering the water supply to communities.

After failing to resolve the matter through dialogue, the water company escalated the issue to the Western Regional Coordinating Council (WRCC), seeking intervention. Attempts by GWCL and WRC to reach a compromise had been unsuccessful due to the company’s entrenched position.

Minister’s Intervention and Ultimatum

In response, Western Regional Minister Joseph Nelson, on Friday, 7th March 2025, intervened to broker an amicable resolution. He stressed that the production and supply of water in the Metropolis and surrounding communities must not be obstructed by the activities of Wangkang Ceramics.

“The company’s operations should not interfere with the work of the Ghana Water Company. They must immediately find an alternative way of managing their waste and ensure that River Anankore is free from any obstructions,” the minister stated.

He further warned that failure to comply within the timeframe would lead to strict enforcement measures against the company.

Next Steps

With the ultimatum in place, all eyes are on Wangkang Ceramics to see whether the company will adhere to the directive or face possible sanctions. Meanwhile, both GWCL and WRC remain committed to ensuring the protection of water bodies in the region, emphasizing the crucial role of River Anankore in sustaining water supply to thousands of residents.

The issue underscores the growing concerns over industrial pollution in Ghana’s water bodies and the need for strict enforcement of environmental laws to safeguard public health and water resources.
