Anglogold Ashanti Iduapriem Mine Boosts Technical Education with Sewing Machine Donation to Tarkwa Technical Institute
Anglogold Ashanti Iduapriem Mine has delivered a significant boost to technical education by donating five industrial sewing machines worth 25,000 Ghana cedis to the Tarkwa Technical Institute’s Fashion Department.

The contribution, exceeding the school’s initial request for three machines, aims to address acute equipment shortages and enhance practical training for students pursuing careers in fashion and garment production.
During a handover ceremony, Stephen Adjei, Sustainability Manager of Anglogold Ashanti Iduapriem Mine, underscored the company’s dedication to advancing education and sustainable community growth. “Technical training is essential, and every institution promoting this path deserves collective support,” Adjei stated. “Equipping students with modern tools prepares them not only for the workforce but also to drive local economic growth.”
The donation responds to an urgent appeal from the institute’s principal, who revealed that nearly 200 fashion students were sharing just three industrial sewing machines. Adjei explained the decision to surpass the school’s request: “While three additional machines would have brought the total to six, we recognized the scale of the challenge and added two more to ensure meaningful impact.”
Strengthening Communities Through Education
Adjei framed the gesture as part of the mine’s broader mission to foster economic empowerment and lasting community partnerships. “Communities hosting our operations should thrive alongside us,” he said, calling on other businesses in the Tarkwa Nsuaem Municipality to invest in educational institutions. He further pledged the mine’s sustained support for initiatives that cultivate skilled technicians and entrepreneurs, particularly in sectors like fashion, which hold untapped potential for youth-led innovation.
Transforming Learning Outcomes
Francisca Abena Lewis, Vice Principal of Administration at Tarkwa Technical Institute, hailed the donation as transformative. “With 200 students and only three machines, practical lessons were severely hampered. These five new machines will revolutionize hands-on training,” she said. Lewis assured Anglogold Ashanti that the equipment would be meticulously maintained and utilized to maximize student benefit, adding, “We are deeply grateful and hope this marks the beginning of continued collaboration.”
A Model for Corporate-Community Partnership
The initiative aligns with Anglogold Ashanti Iduapriem Mine’s sustainability goals, prioritising education and social progress as pillars of long-term community resilience. By addressing infrastructure gaps in technical training, the mine aims to nurture a pipeline of skilled professionals capable of diversifying local economies beyond mining.
The donation arrives at a critical juncture for Ghana’s fashion sector, where demand for skilled labor and entrepreneurial talent is rising. For Tarkwa Technical Institute’s students, the machines represent more than tools—they symbolize a bridge to opportunity, innovation, and self-reliance.
