The conflict, which erupted between the two coastal fishing communities, claimed the life of 45-year-old John Ekow Abban—a husband to two wives and father of seven—and left several others injured. Among the wounded was the Chief of Butre, Nana Egya Butsia X, who sustained a severe machete cut to his hand.

Once a bustling fishing hub, Asemko now remains empty as residents stay away for fear of reprisal attacks from their neighbors in Butre. This fear persists despite the visible presence of security personnel during a recent visit by officials.

The situation has severely disrupted daily life. According to Ebenezer Cudjoe, the area’s assembly member, schoolchildren from Asemko are currently forced to attend classes in an adjoining village due to the instability.

In an effort to address the security concerns, the Western Regional Security Council (REGSEC) Chairman and Regional Minister, Joseph Nelson, visited the Butre community to update the chief and his people on the progress of the investigation. He was accompanied by the Municipal Chief Executive for Ahanta West, Ing. Ebenezer Aidoo, and other members of REGSEC.

Mr. Nelson announced that 11 suspects have so far been apprehended in connection with the deadly clash. He pledged his commitment to ensuring that all those involved in the matter are brought to justice.

However, it remains unclear whether the update on the arrests has fully satisfied the concerned residents of Butre.

Against this backdrop of lingering tension, the Chief of Butre, Nana Egya Butsia X, is renewing his call for the government to establish a security post in the area. He argues that the nearest accessible security post is located in the municipal capital, which is too far to allow for a quick response in emergencies.

“The only accessible security post is located in the municipal capital, which is far from the community,” the chief stated.

His concerns are echoed by local health workers. Nursing Officer Meredith Bissue, who witnessed the clash, has thrown her support behind the chief’s call, stressing the urgent need for action given the volatile nature of the area.
