The mudslide, caused by hours of heavy downpour, deposited thick mud and debris onto the roadway, forcing authorities to divert traffic and urge commuters to use alternative routes while exercising extreme caution.

By dawn, a full emergency response team had been deployed to the scene.

The Municipal Chief Executive, Mr. Ebenezer Cobbinah, together with personnel from the Western/Central Police Command, the Ghana National Fire Service, the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO), and the Ghana Prisons Service, arrived at the scene as early as 5:00 a.m. to coordinate efforts to restore access.

Heavy-duty equipment from Gold Fields Ghana Limited was also deployed, with excavators and tipper trucks working to clear the mud and reopen the highway.

The MCE commended Gold Fields Ghana Limited for their swift intervention in supporting the emergency response and helping to speed up clearance works.

However, the impact of the rains extended far beyond the blocked highway.

At Tarkwa Senior High School, floodwaters once again disrupted parts of the campus, affecting activities and raising fresh concerns about the school’s vulnerability during heavy rains.

In Nsuta, Ghana Manganese Company Limited was also heavily affected as the entire company premises were flooded following the downpour, disrupting movement within the facility. The GMC Park, a community facility built to serve residents and school children as both a recreational ground and a walkway linking homes and schools, was completely submerged, cutting off access and forcing residents to find alternative routes.

Meanwhile, residents privately shared video footage showing flooded homes and submerged rooms. Some of them, in distress, described their situation as being “like fish in water,” saying they needed assistance to even step outside their rooms.

Authorities continue efforts to clear the mudslide and restore normal traffic flow as the rains leave behind a trail of destruction across the Tarkwa enclave.
