“Opportunities Are Many, But We Must Work Hard to Merit Them” – Prof. Grace Ofori Sarpong Inspires Women

Reflecting on her past, Prof. Sarpong recalled a time when communication was slow and difficult, with letters taking weeks to reach their recipients. Compared to today’s fast-paced digital world, she noted that while technology has made life easier, it also comes with its own set of challenges. “Opportunities are too many, and that is why we have to come together as women, support each other, and work harder to merit the positions we want to occupy,” she said.

She made these remarks during an event to commemorate International Women’s Day 2025, where LIMAP reaffirmed its commitment to mentoring young women and pushing for gender equality in the mining and allied sectors.

LIMAP’s Role in Transforming Generations

Prof. Sarpong emphasized the impact of LIMAP, which was founded nine years ago to empower women in the industry. She highlighted the association’s slogan, “Shining Ahead and Transforming Our Generation,” as a call to action for women to build their capacities and leave lasting legacies wherever they find themselves.

“We motivate, encourage, and support one another. We strive to reach our full potential to serve as role models for the younger generation. This is why we go to basic schools—to catch them young and show them that their future is bright,” she added.

A Call for Action on Gender Equality

Speaking at the event, Professor Michael Affam, Dean of ORIC at the University of Mines and Technology (UMaT), stressed the significance of International Women’s Day and the need for collective efforts to ensure gender equality.

“The theme for this year’s celebration, Accelerate Action: Personal and Collective Responsibility, is ideal because it calls for real progress in treating all people equally,” he said.

Prof. Affam called for inclusivity and a conscious effort to recognize the extraordinary contributions of women worldwide. “Women are not asking for too much; they are simply asking for their fair share. Today is a day to reaffirm our commitment to ensuring that women are not pushed to the background,” he added.

Breaking Barriers Through Unity

President of LIMAP and General Manager of Gold Fields Ghana Tarkwa Mine, Katherine Kupool, reinforced the importance of women’s unity in overcoming barriers.

“Our destiny as women is shaped by both personal growth and collective progress. Through our united efforts, we can challenge the status quo and push for change,” she stated.

Expressing appreciation to Gold Fields Ghana Foundation, UMaT, and LIMAP members, Madam Kupool stressed that the celebration should not just be a symbolic annual event but a reminder of the need for action.

“Accelerating action requires taking concrete steps, supporting one another, and transforming our shared vision of equality into reality,” she emphasized.

She noted that International Women’s Day, which has been celebrated globally since 1977, serves as a platform to honour women’s achievements and advocate for their rights.

Organized by LIMAP in partnership with Gold Fields Ghana, the event brought together women professionals, industry leaders, and students to discuss ways to accelerate gender equality in mining and allied professions. The discussions focused on mentorship, leadership, and the importance of taking personal and collective responsibility in pushing for a more inclusive society.

With a strong commitment to mentorship and advocacy, LIMAP continues to empower women to shine ahead and transform their generation.
