Tarkwa Roars as Black Stars Hold England in Thrilling World Cup Clash
The Cyanide Astro Turf in Tarkwa was turned into a vibrant hub of excitement and national pride as hundreds of football fans gathered at Space FM’s World Cup Viewing Centre to watch Ghana face England in a tightly contested Group stage encounter at the FIFA World Cup.
The atmosphere was electric from start to finish, with supporters filling the venue in large numbers, creating a carnival-like setting that reflected the importance of the match. Every tackle, interception and clearance by the Black Stars was met with loud cheers, while goalkeeper Benjamin Asare received thunderous applause for his crucial saves that kept Ghana in the game.
England dominated possession for long spells, dictating the tempo and completing 283 passes compared to Ghana’s 54 by the 37th minute. However, despite their control of the ball, the Three Lions found it difficult to break down a well organised and disciplined Ghanaian defence that remained compact and resilient throughout the contest.
At halftime, optimism remained high among supporters, many of whom believed Ghana could produce a surprise result if they maintained their defensive discipline and took advantage of counterattacking opportunities. A representative of the Gold Fields Ghana Foundation, known as Crucial, expressed confidence in a Ghana victory based on the team’s spirited performance.
The second half followed a similar pattern, with England enjoying sustained possession but struggling to convert dominance into clear cut chances. Ghana stayed patient, soaking up pressure and looking to strike on the break.
The Black Stars came closest to snatching a winner in the closing stages when Mohammed Fatawu made a surging run forward and released Prince Adu through on goal. The striker’s heavy touch allowed England’s defenders to recover, but he still managed to get a shot away while falling, narrowly missing what would have been a dramatic winner.
At the final whistle, Ghanaian fans erupted in celebration, applauding a hard earned draw that felt like a victory against one of football’s giants. The result was widely seen as a testament to the team’s resilience, organisation and fighting spirit.
Space FM Sports Presenter Kofi Karikari praised the Black Stars’ tactical discipline and the coach’s approach, describing the performance as a strong indication of the team’s growing maturity and confidence on the global stage.
Beyond football, the viewing centre also offered fans additional entertainment activities including table tennis and snooker competitions. Winners and participants in these events, as well as quiz competitions held during the programme, received Gold Fields branded souvenirs, adding to the festive atmosphere.
