Tarkwa Youth Petition Authorities to Renew Gold Fields Mine Lease Before April 2027

The demonstration brought together youth groups, residents, and other stakeholders who marched through parts of Tarkwa to draw attention to the importance of the mining company's continued operations in the municipality. The protesters presented a petition to the relevant authorities, urging them to begin and conclude the renewal process in good time.
The youth said Gold Fields Tarkwa Mine plays an important role in the local economy through employment, business opportunities, infrastructure development, support for community projects, among others. They warned that uncertainty over the lease could affect workers, businesses, and households that depend directly or indirectly on the mine.

They submitted a petition calling on the government to renew the lease of the Gold Fields Tarkwa Mine before it expires in April 2027.
The petition read by one of the conveyors, Richard Nsoh, the assembly member for Tarkwa- New site, appealed to the government, Ministry of Lands and Natural Resources, the Minerals Commission, and other relevant institutions to consider the economic importance of the mine to Tarkwa, Western Region and Ghana as a whole.

The petition was received by the Presiding member of the municipality on behalf of the authorities, with an assurance that the concerns would be forwarded to the appropriate institutions for consideration. The demonstrators said they expected the renewal process to be transparent, timely, and beneficial to both the mining company and its host communities.
