The Centre, set to focus on artificial intelligence (AI), the Internet of Things (IoT), and robotics, is expected to equip students with cutting-edge skills relevant to the future of mining and other industries.

This announcement was made by Bayerinaa Nmanii, Senior Manager in charge of Mining at AngloGold Ashanti Iduapriem Mine, during the “Start Right, End Well” program, an annual initiative designed to guide and support first-year undergraduate students at UMaT.

Nmanii reaffirmed AngloGold Ashanti’s commitment to empowering individuals and advancing societies through education and innovation. He highlighted that in 2024 alone, the mine invested approximately GHC 12 million in its Education and Youth Development Programme, demonstrating its dedication to improving access to quality education and fostering youth empowerment in the Tarkwa-Nsuaem Municipality.

“The Smart Systems (Robotics) Centre will provide hands-on training in AI, IoT, and robotics tools, ensuring students are well-equipped for the evolving job market,” Nmanii stated.

The initiative has received strong backing from UMaT leadership. Professor Anthony Simons, the immediate past Pro Vice-Chancellor of UMaT, expressed enthusiasm for the project, stressing the importance of not only helping students survive but empowering them to thrive in their academic and professional journeys.

The “Start Right, End Well” program, which AngloGold Ashanti Iduapriem Mine funds with support from Ladies in Mining and Allied Professions and UMaT, aims to provide students with the necessary guidance to excel academically and in their future careers.

Some first-year students expressed their gratitude to AngloGold Ashanti Iduapriem Mine and Ladies in Mining and Allied Professions for spearheading the initiative, which they believe will significantly impact their academic growth and career prospects.

With the upcoming Smart Systems (Robotics) Centre, AngloGold Ashanti is not only reinforcing its commitment to education but also positioning UMaT students at the forefront of technological advancements in mining and beyond.
