Gold Fields Ghana Hosts National College of Defence Studies for Strategic Engagement on Smart Governance and Sustainability
Gold Fields Ghana recently welcomed a delegation from the National College of Defence Studies (NCDS) to its Tarkwa mine as part of an experiential research study under the theme: “Linkages between Smart Governance and Sustainable Development in the Greater Accra, Western, and Oti Regions.
The visit formed part of NCDS’s curriculum, designed to equip senior military officers, civil servants, and allied personnel with strategic leadership skills in defence and national security. The tour provided participants with first-hand insights into how private sector operations align with national development and governance priorities.
Showcasing Responsible Mining Practices
Led by Kwame Appau, Gold Fields Ghana’s Mining Manager (then Acting Tarkwa Mine Manager), and supported by the senior leadership team, the delegation was briefed on several aspects of Gold Fields' operations. The team presented on:
- Environmental stewardship and sustainability practices
- Tailings Storage Facility (TSF) management
- Comprehensive safety protocols
- Community engagement and social investment initiatives
These briefings demonstrated Gold Fields Ghana’s commitment to responsible mining and its role in promoting sustainable development in its operational regions.
Bridging Theory and Practice
The visit offered NCDS participants an opportunity to connect theoretical frameworks in governance and policy with practical corporate implementation. The insights gained are expected to enhance the participants' strategic thinking and decision-making in their various roles within government and defence institutions.
Strengthening National Collaboration
Gold Fields Ghana values such engagements as vital to building trust and collaboration between the private and public sectors. The company remains committed to initiatives that promote shared learning, effective governance, and inclusive development.
