Gold Fields Ghana Foundation launches Prisons Agro-Support and Empowerment PASE) Project for the Tarkwa Prison Service

However, with a daily feeding allocation of only GH$5.00 per inmate for a population of more than 340 inmates, The Gold fields Ghana Limited through the Gold Fields Ghana Foundation has launched its Prisons Agro-Support and Empowerment PASE) Project, in Tarkwa on Thursday, 6 August 2026. The initiative seeks to strengthen food security, promote sustainable agriculture and equip inmates with practical vocational skills that support rehabilitation and successful reintegration into society.

The Foundation is supporting the expansion of the Tarkwa prison's oil palm plantation from 30 to 50 acres through the establishment of an additional 20-acre plantation with
 1,400 Tenera oil palm seedlings, 141 bags of NPK 15:15:15 fertilizers, 200 bags of organic compost, 10 knapsack sprayers, 36 pieces of glyphosate (weedicide), 20 pieces of cutlasses and 10 pairs of wellington boots.

With inputs at a cost of GH¢144,666.00, the foundation believes will provide the resources needed to establish, nurture and maintain the plantation, reinforcing the Foundation's Commitment to sustainable agriculture and the long-term sucess of the project.

Speaking at the launch, the executive secretary for the Goldfields Ghana Foundation, Abdul Razak Yakubu, shared that rehabilitation is about restoring hope, building skills and creating opportunities for successful reintegration into the society. 

“Beyond increasing agricultural production, the PASE Project is designed to empower inmates and prison officers with practical knowledge in oil palm cultivation, plantation management, crop husbandry and sustainable farming practices. By equipping inmates with employable agricultural skills, the project contributes meaningfully to rehabilitation, helping prepare them for productive livelihoods upon their release while promoting dignity, self-reliance and renewed hope for the future.” He said. 

He revealed the foundation’s plan to consider the establishment of an oil palm processing center to
enhance value addition and reduce reliance on external suppliers.

The Foundation pledges its commitment to demonstrate that agriculture can serve as a powerful catalyst for food security, skills development, rehabilitation and socio-economic transformation.
