Western Central Police Arrest 22 in Major Crackdown on Illegal Mining

The arrests, conducted on April 8, 2025, mark the latest effort by authorities to combat environmental degradation linked to unlawful extraction practices.

Deputy Western Central Regional Commander, Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) Bismark Agyapong, announced the operation during a press briefing, revealing that the suspects aged 19 and 30 were captured following intelligence-led raids. Among those detained were Albert Adu Bonsra, 19; Stephen Kwakye, 20; Richard Atigah, 23; Nana Yaw Boakye, 30; and Alkainu Hassan, 20. A complete list of names was released by police, underscoring the youth of many involved.

Authorities confiscated mining equipment during the operation, including eleven pumping machines, seven shovels, a pickaxe, and two chamfan machines, tools typically used to wash and process minerals. “These arrests and seizures disrupt a network that has persistently harmed our environment and communities,” ACP Agyapong stated. The suspects were arraigned before the Asankrangwa District Court on April 9 and remanded into custody to aid ongoing investigations. The police confirmed that case documents would be forwarded to the Attorney-General’s Department for prosecution.

ACP Agyapong issued a stern warning to others engaged in illegal mining, known locally as galamsey: “The government’s resolve to eradicate this menace is unshaken. Those involved must cease immediately or face the full force of the law.” His remarks align with broader national efforts to address illegal mining, which has devastated water bodies, farmlands, and forests.

The operation highlights intensified enforcement in the region, though challenges persist as demand for minerals and economic pressures fuel the illicit trade. Community leaders and environmental advocates have praised the arrests, urging sustained action to protect natural resources.
