Dome-Kwabenya Primary Dispute: “The Injustice Must End Before 2028” — Aggrieved Aspirant Demands Fresh Elections
The aspirant alleged that he was initially declared the winner after securing 807 votes, compared with 800 votes for one opponent and 236 votes for another. However, he claimed that the results were altered approximately 30 minutes after the declaration.
“Ladies and gentlemen, this is the injustice in Dome-Kwabenya, and I think the injustice must end here before we go into 2028,” he stated.
He warned that failure to address the alleged irregularities could undermine the party’s chances of retaining the parliamentary seat in the 2028 general elections.
“If we don't do something about this, we are just giving the seat—I mean, a bonanza—to other parties. And we will not sit down and allow that to happen,” he said.
Aspirant Questions Credibility of Electoral Process
The aggrieved aspirant emphasised that he was no novice in the party, citing his experience as a collation officer in Dome-Kwabenya during the 2020 and 2024 general elections.
He maintained that he and his colleagues had worked hard for the party over the years and expressed concern about what he perceived as the growing influence of a few individuals over the party’s internal affairs.
“It looks like the party is in somebody's pocket, but that should not be the case,” he lamented.
He further questioned the credibility and fairness of the primary elections, alleging that some individuals who openly campaigned for particular candidates were also involved in actions that compromised the electoral process.
According to him, an Assembly Member for Agbogba allegedly campaigned for certain candidates, including one of his opponents, and was among those involved in tearing ballot papers. The aspirant claimed to have evidence to support his allegations.
“Ladies and gentlemen, is this democracy? That is not democracy. That is what we call kakistocracy,” he declared.
The allegations raise concerns about the conduct of the disputed primaries, particularly regarding electoral supervision, the handling of ballot papers and the transparency of the results. They remain allegations pending independent verification.
Calls for Immediate Intervention by National Leadership
The aspirant appealed directly to the party’s national leadership, urging the National Chairman and General Secretary to intervene immediately and ensure that the petition submitted by the aggrieved group receives a fair and impartial hearing.
He expressed confidence that the party’s leadership would listen to their concerns and take the necessary steps to address the dispute.
“We are calling on national to come to our aid immediately and investigate, and make sure the petition we wrote to them is heard,” he said.
He also demanded the immediate cancellation of the disputed elections and the organisation of fresh polls under credible and impartial electoral supervision.
According to him, a transparent review of the process is necessary to restore confidence among party members and ensure that the outcome reflects the genuine will of the delegates.
Allegations Against Constituency Leadership
The aspirant also accused the Municipal Chief Executive (MCE), the Member of Parliament (MP) and the MP’s husband of contributing to what he described as a dictatorial atmosphere within the constituency.
He called for an end to what he characterised as political intimidation and the alleged imposition of candidates, urging both the regional and national leadership to take the matter seriously.
“We have suffered enough, and the national and the region must look into the issue,” he said.
He warned that leaving the grievances unresolved could deepen divisions within the party and weaken its prospects ahead of the 2028 general elections.
The individuals mentioned in the allegations were not represented in the statement provided for this report. Their responses would be necessary to present their positions on the claims.
A Call for Justice Before 2028
In his concluding remarks, the aspirant urged the party’s national and regional leadership not to delay action on the petition, warning that failure to address the dispute could have far-reaching consequences for party unity and electoral fortunes.
He stressed that transparency, accountability and adherence to credible electoral procedures were essential to restoring confidence in the party’s internal democratic processes.
“They should not sleep, otherwise the seat will sleep under the carpet,” he cautioned.
The aspirant’s central demand is for an impartial investigation into the alleged irregularities, a fair hearing of the petition and the annulment of the disputed elections, followed by fresh polls if the appropriate authorities determine that the allegations warrant such action.
As the party looks towards the 2028 general elections, the handling of the dispute could prove significant in determining whether confidence and unity can be restored within the Dome-Kwabenya constituency.
