Healthy Beginnings, Hopeful Futures: Ghana Health Service Celebrates World Health Day

Speaking at the event, Mabel Kissiwaa Asafo, Acting Director of the Health Promotion Division, urged collective action to empower families with knowledge and foster an environment where individuals can make informed health decisions. She underscored the role of public awareness in improving health outcomes.

Dr. Frank Lule, Officer-in-Charge at WHO Ghana, praised Ghana’s 40% drop in maternal mortality and 50% decline in infant mortality but emphasized the need for more significant investments in antenatal care, lifesaving interventions, newborn care, breastfeeding support, and family planning. He also stressed the urgency of investing in midwives to improve maternal and child health.
Delivering the keynote address, Director-General of the Service, Prof. Samuel Kaba Akoriyea, reaffirmed Ghana’s commitment to reducing infant and maternal mortality, citing alarming statistics that show two million babies die within their first month of life globally. He emphasized the need for urgent action to address existing gaps, stressing that saving women and children is a shared responsibility for a better Ghana.

Prof. Akoriyea outlined Health Promotion, Media Engagement and Community Scorecards as the key areas for immediate action and called on all stakeholders to collaborate, innovate, and sacrifice to change the narrative and improve maternal and child health outcomes. He concluded by urging that the spirit of World Health Day should not be limited to a single event but should guide efforts throughout the year.
With a renewed commitment from health officials and partners, Ghana continues to prioritize the well-being of mothers and children, ensuring a healthier future for generations to come.
