The Gold Fields Ghana Foundation, in collaboration with the Community Water and Sanitation Agency (CWSA) in Takoradi, has successfully organized a three-day technical training workshop for members of Water and Sanitation (WATSAN) committees from the company’s Tarkwa and Damang host communities. The workshop, which aimed to enhance local capacity in maintaining and managing water systems, brought together 44 participants from various communities. The initiative forms part of the Foundation’s broader strategy to empower local structures to ensure the sustainability of water infrastructure projects.

Practical Training for Long-Term Impact

The intensive hands-on training covered key technical areas, including:

- 🔹 Fundamentals of hydraulics and water flow principles
- 🔹 Installation and maintenance of water pumps
- 🔹 Effective methods of water treatment
- 🔹 Water quality management and sustainability strategiesParticipants gained the necessary skills to troubleshoot and perform routine maintenance on water systems without relying heavily on external technical assistance. This reduces downtime in case of faults and cuts long-term operational costs for community-managed facilities.

Building Self-Reliance and Sustainable Skills

Through this capacity-building initiative, the Gold Fields Ghana Foundation is strengthening the ability of community-based committees to manage critical resources. The training also fosters a sense of ownership and responsibility for public infrastructure, key pillars in promoting sustainable development within host communities. To support continued learning and practice, each participant was presented with a certificate of completion and a WATSAN technical handbook.

Commitment to Sustainable Community Development

Speaking at the closing of the workshop, representatives from both the Foundation and CWSA underscored the importance of empowering community actors with technical knowledge. They reaffirmed their commitment to deepening partnerships that prioritize local resilience and sustainability.
This initiative reflects Gold Fields Ghana Foundation’s ongoing investment in community development, one that goes beyond infrastructure provision to building lasting human capital and self-reliant systems.
