Speaking at the opening ceremony of the Ghana Universities Debate Championship 2026 at UMaT, Professor Brew, highlighted in his speech that intellectual maturity involves the ability to disagree firmly while remaining fair, respectful and open to learning.
He says it is an exercise in disciplinary thinking rather than winning a dialogue without facts. He said public conversations can quickly become polarised, with social media often favouring speed and outrage over reflection and nuance. He noted that leadership begins before formal titles—in keeping one's word, preparing well, accepting responsibility, treating people fairly and choosing what is right, even when shortcuts are available.

According to him, although materials for information are at the disposal of many, the authenticity of the material and the information it provides should be looked at.
The Dean said university students have an important role in Ghana's development, with access to knowledge, networks and opportunities that come with responsibility. He said students must develop their voices, volunteer, mentor others, build, join intellectual communities, learn beyond their disciplines and discover how they can contribute to others' lives. He urged students to look beyond the classroom to craft and apply knowledge to its full capacity. He advised that, to have effective communication skills, understanding and having the ability to listen is very crucial.
