PUBLIC STATEMENT: CLARIFICATION ON SPACE-FM’S NON-PARTICIPATION IN THE TARKWA-NSUAEM MUNICIPAL ASSEMBLY EXCELLENCE AWARDS
Management of Space-FM has taken note of public enquiries and discussions regarding the station’s absence from the nominations for the Best Radio Station category in the Tarkwa-Nsuaem Municipal Assembly Excellence Awards. Our stance will be communicated to the organisers in due course.
For the avoidance of doubt, Space-FM was neither overlooked nor disqualified.
The station made a considered corporate decision not to submit an entry or participate in the awards scheme. Our absence from the nominations therefore reflects this corporate position. As the municipality’s first commercial radio station, Space-FM has, for more than 22 years, served Tarkwa and its surrounding communities as a trusted source of information, education and entertainment. Throughout this period, we have worked professionally with successive governments, public institutions, businesses and community organisations while preserving our editorial independence and political neutrality.
As a media organisation, Space-FM regularly reports on, scrutinises and holds public institutions—including the Municipal Assembly—accountable on behalf of the public. We therefore considered it prudent not to participate in an awards scheme directly organised by an institution that remains an important subject of our news coverage and public-interest oversight.
Our concern is not an allegation against the organisers, the adjudicating panel or any nominee. It is about protecting the independence of the Space-FM brand and avoiding any perception—whether intended or otherwise—that the station is seeking recognition from, or becoming aligned with, a public institution it must continue to cover objectively.
This position should not be interpreted as hostility, political disagreement or a breakdown in relations between Space-FM and the Tarkwa-Nsuaem Municipal Assembly. We respect the Assembly’s mandate and will continue to cover its programmes, policies and activities fairly, professionally and in the public interest. We congratulate all individuals and institutions nominated for recognition. Our decision not to participate is a corporate choice peculiar to Space-FM and should not be understood as questioning the competence, achievements or credibility of any nominee. Management remains supportive of initiatives that advance media professionalism within the municipality, particularly capacity building, professional training, improved access to public information and programmes that strengthen responsible journalism.
We may reconsider participation in future editions where the awards are administered through an independent professional, academic or civil-society body, with the Assembly participating as a partner or sponsor. Space-FM’s greatest recognition remains the trust and loyalty of our listeners, advertisers, partners and the communities we have served for more than two decades. Protecting that trust and maintaining our independence will continue to guide our institutional decisions.
We sincerely appreciate the concern expressed by our cherished listeners and stakeholders regarding our absence from the nominations. We remain committed to serving the public with credibility, courage, fairness and professionalism.
