School Headmaster in Court for Alleged Illegal Abortion of Student's Pregnancy

The 34-year-old married man appeared before the Sekondi Gender-Based Violence Court on Tuesday, October 21, 2025, facing serious legal consequences for his alleged actions.

Presiding Judge Her Honour Mrs Naa Amarley Akowah granted the accused self-recognisance bail set at GHC 100,000. As part of the strict bail conditions, Okyere was ordered to surrender his passport, school documents, and any other travel documents to the court. At the time of reporting, he had not yet met these conditions.

The case has been adjourned to November 25, 2025, to allow for further investigations.

According to the prosecution, led by Chief Inspector B.P. Ahinsah, the case was brought to light by the victim's mother, Madam Hawa Nyankum, a 56-year-old trader. The victim, who recently completed Junior High School at Okyere's academy, resides with her parents in Badukrom.

The facts presented in court outline a disturbing sequence of events. Investigations revealed that Okyere had been engaged in an "amorous relationship" with the student, which resulted in a pregnancy. On September 27, 2025, after the girl felt unwell and was advised by a local health facility to take a pregnancy test, she went directly to the headmaster's house.

The prosecutor stated that Okyere assisted the victim with the test, which confirmed the pregnancy. He then allegedly took her to a drug store in Takoradi, purchased an abortion drug, and administered it to her at his house. After the procedure, he provided her with a sanitary pad and then sent her home.

The victim’s parents grew suspicious upon noticing the pad and, after questioning her, learned the truth. This prompted them to file a formal report with the Sekondi Domestic Violence and Victim Support Unit (DOVVSU).

A subsequent medical examination at a different hospital by a gynaecologist confirmed that the girl had undergone an incomplete abortion.

In a twist to the case, the prosecution detailed Okyere's attempts to evade responsibility. The headmaster initially denied the offence, claiming he had only given GHC 400 to a 17-year-old classmate of the victim, whom he identified as the one responsible for the pregnancy and abortion.

However, police investigations uncovered that Okyere had allegedly coached, coerced, and threatened the young boy to claim responsibility. The accused reportedly made the boy swear an oath by the Bosompra River deity never to reveal the truth.

This plan unravelled when the frightened boy later confessed to the police and his parents, leading to the re-arrest of the headmaster. The case remains under active investigation.
